![]() We were two young men who wanted to get 1 million hits on youtube. We created a video of us doing a goofy dance and shot it around the internet, and we are now lying quite happily at the 500,000 mark. Brad Morris and I soon became known as the GratiDudes, experts in gratitude. How difficult could it really be? We just had to practice our gratitude for the things that we have in life....right? When launching that video I did not realise that my knowledge of the gift and power of gratitude was so limited. And I find this with many others too, who have read of the importance of it, and give it a cursory glance at the beginning or the end of the day. I did not realise how much that I still had to learn of the power of gratitude and how it was to be the single most impactful influence on our successes in business, marketing and all areas of life. It continues to amaze me as I create my new life, at how much easier it has made the changes happen when I remember to acknowledge it. And as the world of the Gratitudes seemed to crumble around me, it was gratitude that brought me to a place of peace and allowed me to step more confidently in to my new calling. Gratitude is still undervalued by the mainstream business world, and even spiritual and energy healing enterprises can enhance their effectiveness through giving it greater attention. Here are my four favourite lessons in gratitude, which are only a fraction of the awesomeness that this quality has brought in to my life: 1) Many of the manifestation books, including the one that Brad and I wrote a few years ago, spoke of how when we are grateful for what we have we can attract more, which is true. After coaching hundreds of people over the last few years, I believe that gratitude for the sake of gratitude is a far higher reason to live in gratitude. When gratitude comes with attachments and expectations we can give up on it if it does not meet them in our timing, especially if we have a big vision. Gratitude is a feeling and we have to allow ourselves to feel it. With higher expectations we may not allow ourselves to feel gratitude now. We need to practice the big vision without attachment. It does not mean that we don't allow ourselves to expect the best, it simply means that we choose to be grateful at every stage of our evolution, instead of simply waiting for that big result we seek. It brings us in to the now moment and allows us to feel deep gratitude for what we already have. Sure, we do attract more, but if we have high expectations, we may just end up ditching our gratitude lists, which I did end up doing for a while, and concluding that this is all part of a great gratitude hoax. Know that you will attract more if you are in gratitude, and make it about the act of feeling grateful rather than what you will get by being grateful. That's when you truly experience the joy of gratitude. 2) When we focus only on the material things that we are grateful for, we can still feel a sense of emptiness. In time I learned that it was some of the intrinsic qualities of who I am, that I was forgetting to be grateful for. Gifts that our creator ( what ever you call her/him/it ) has bestowed upon us. The voice with which we can inspire others. Our creativity which allows us to come up with solutions to our greatest business challenges. Our intuition which allows us to make the choices which are in alignment with our highest self. If we have more of what we are grateful for, then it surely carries over to our inner qualities of spirit- peace, joy, happiness, contentment, intuition, creativity, abundance, courage, confidence. We can choose to be grateful for each and every one of these, as much as for the blessings in our outer world. Truly, these are the qualities that attract the outer world anyhow. 3) Gratitude can be used to embody gratitude for that which we want as if it has already happened. Instead of misusing your imagination and worrying about accumulating debt, or how you are going to pay your business bills off, change your focus to one of future gratitude. Say "Thank you" as if you have already received that money. You will hopefully be saying thank you when you have manifested it, so why not start right here, right now, and create a more grateful subconscious mind through repetitive gratitude. You can do the same with your larger goals in life. I say "thank you" each day for the book that I am writing, as if it is already written. I am imagining how grateful I will feel when the book is published and bringing smiles to the faces of others. I recommend breaking it down in to your dream lists and your more pressing lists. It is important to pay the bills, and I have experienced the manifestation of my dreams in life before, without the bills being paid. You can have both. From a wise yoga master I learned that two people could put this in to practice in their daily life, one could manifest what he is visioning almost immediately, whereas another would need to keep focusing on that intention a wee bit longer. It has to do with the karma accrued from this life and previous lives, something that is not necessarily mentioned in other books on this process. As a result people, including us, would build high expectations out of their gratitude lists, and feel disillusioned when it did not yield the intended results. Keep moving forward, forgive and forget the past, and in time your visioning, followed by intuitive action, will create the intended results. 4) Of course, you don't want to be focused solely on the gratitude for future events, you want to make peace with the past by expressing your gratitude for it too. And that does not just mean the fun things. When I was 14 years of age I was involved in a near death experience and spent 6 weeks in hospital. For many years it caused me much unhealed pain to talk about it, and I liked to play the victim. When I started to turn to gratitude for the experience, I was able to bring about a greater healing and sense of peace. Without events playing out as they did back then I may not be living the life that I am living today. The same goes for the tough relationships, whether personal or business. When you can find the strength to say thank you in meditation to those who have done you wrong, or screwed you over, you release the past that is holding you back. When you are able to express gratitude for the most painful times in your life, and the lessons they gifted you, you again release any destructive hold they may have on your life and business. The value of gratitude is truly appreciated when we bring it in to every experience in our life. Our gratitude lists could get repetitive quickly if we are simply grateful for the material things that we have in our life. When we can find gratitude for the myriad of life experiences, and the gifts that we each possess, our life opens up to magical planes of existence that we can not even anticipate. The quality of life that I live now comes down to a huge amount of gratitude. In the beginning I did not know gratitude. I thought I did. But without the gratitude, my successes quickly became a claim of the egos. Gratitude is also a powerful antidote to pride. I still need to remind myself from time to time when I get in to a head funk. But I will not guilt myself for the lack of gratitude, simply thank my higher self for the reminder. I look forward to hearing how your business results, your marketing results, and your overall happiness in life begins to expand as you take in to consideration some of these facets of gratitude. Appreciate gratitude for what it is, without any expectations, and relish in the joy that it brings in to your days. And share the many other things that you have learned about gratitude. I have only shared a few here, but know that this is really one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves, and it comes down to our personal attitude.
